How Do We Conduct Bug Sweeps?
Guide to bug sweeps and who might need one.
Welcome back to another episode of Titan PI TV, the series that takes you inside the live workings of a professional investigation agency. I’m Simon Henson, your host and Managing Director of Titan Private Investigation Limited, and this week we’re tackling a subject that generates a great deal of enquiry from both private individuals and businesses alike: bug sweeps.
Whether you’ve stumbled across this episode out of curiosity or because you genuinely suspect that someone may be listening in on your private conversations, this guide will walk you through exactly what a bug sweep is, who needs one, how we conduct them, and what happens when we actually find something.
What Exactly Is a Bug Sweep?
At its core, a bug sweep — also referred to as a Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) sweep — is the methodical use of specialist equipment designed to detect transmission frequencies and covert surveillance devices. In plain terms, it is a thorough, professional search of a property or premises to identify whether any hidden listening or recording devices have been planted without the knowledge or consent of the occupants.
It is not a quick scan with a consumer-grade gadget purchased online. A professional bug sweep is a rigorous, multi-layered process that requires trained operatives and a suite of highly sophisticated detection equipment — more on that shortly.
Who Needs a Bug Sweep?
Bug sweeps are utilised by two broad categories of client: private individuals and businesses. The circumstances that lead someone to pick up the phone and call us vary, but there are some common scenarios that we encounter regularly.
Private Individuals
One of the most frequent situations we come across involves couples going through a separation or divorce. Imagine this: a couple separates, one party moves out of the family home, and yet somehow — inexplicably — the person who has left appears to be privy to private conversations that took place inside the house after their departure. Those conversations begin surfacing through solicitors, in legal correspondence, or in negotiations where they simply should not appear.
In cases like these, it becomes increasingly apparent that a covert listening device may have been planted in the matrimonial home prior to the individual leaving. It is a deeply unsettling situation, and one that can have serious legal and personal ramifications. A professional bug sweep can either confirm those suspicions or provide the peace of mind that no such device exists.
Corporate Clients
The corporate world presents its own set of vulnerabilities. Businesses make sensitive, high-stakes decisions every day — in boardrooms, in managing directors’ offices, and in directors’ meeting rooms. When confidential information from those discussions begins to surface in ways that cannot be explained, it raises an immediate red flag.
Perhaps a competitor appears to have advance knowledge of your pricing strategy. Perhaps a business negotiation falls apart because the other party seemed to know your position before you’d even sat down at the table. In scenarios such as these, a bug sweep of key decision-making areas is not just advisable — it may be essential to protecting the integrity of your business.
How Much Does a Bug Sweep Cost?
Pricing for bug sweeps varies depending on the nature and scale of the premises involved.
For private clients, the starting price is £1,000 plus VAT, which equates to £1,200 in total. This covers the sweep of a standard residential property — typically a three-bedroom home — and our operative will generally require between three and four hours to conduct a thorough search using our full range of equipment. For larger properties, such as those with four, five, or six bedrooms, the price will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the additional time and resource required.
It is worth noting that for residential sweeps, we advise clients to consider all communal areas as a minimum, but we are equally prepared to sweep bedrooms, bathrooms, and any other areas of concern. If you believe a device could be anywhere in the property, we will cover the whole house.
For corporate clients, pricing is structured differently and is largely dependent on the scope of the sweep. Our strong recommendation to businesses is to focus the sweep on areas where key decisions are made — boardrooms, the managing director’s office, and individual directors’ rooms. This targeted approach keeps costs manageable and ensures that the areas most likely to have been compromised are thoroughly examined.
Where clients request that we extend the sweep to individual workstations — and in a large office, there could be thirty or more of these — the time required increases significantly, and so does the cost. In some cases, a large-scale corporate sweep could run to more than a full day’s work. Our advice is always to think carefully about where the information is most likely to have been leaked from, and to focus the sweep accordingly. There is little value in sweeping every desk in an open-plan office if the sensitive conversations were happening exclusively in the boardroom.
The Equipment We Use
This is where Titan’s approach truly sets itself apart. We deploy a comprehensive array of specialist detection equipment, and crucially, the various tools we use overlap in frequency coverage. This means that no single device or transmission type can slip through the net undetected.
Our operatives use the following equipment as standard during a bug sweep:
- Spectral analysis detectors — to identify and analyse radio frequency signals across a broad spectrum
- Near-field detection receivers — to detect signals being transmitted at very close range
- Non-linear junction detectors (NLJDs) — capable of identifying electronic components even when a device is switched off or not actively transmitting
- GSM locators — to detect devices that communicate via mobile phone networks
- Wi-Fi scanners — to identify devices transmitting over wireless internet frequencies
- Thermal imaging cameras — to detect heat signatures from active electronic devices concealed within walls, furniture, or fittings
- Lens finders — specifically designed to locate hidden camera lenses, even those embedded in everyday objects
- Video pole finders — for accessing and inspecting hard-to-reach areas
- Forensic light search kits — to assist in the physical examination of surfaces and objects
Because this equipment collectively covers such a wide range of frequencies and detection methods, we are able to say with near-complete confidence that if our operatives do not find anything during a sweep, there is nothing to find in your property. That level of assurance is only possible because of the overlapping, multi-layered nature of the technology we employ.
What Happens If We Find Something?
Finding a device during a bug sweep is, of course, a significant moment — and how we handle that discovery is just as important as finding it in the first place.
The first thing we do is photograph the device in situ. We do not simply remove it and hand it over. A full, detailed report is prepared for the client, documenting all of the equipment used during the sweep and including imagery of exactly what was found and where. This report can be invaluable if the matter proceeds to legal action.
Once the device has been identified and documented, we consult with the client about how they wish to proceed. There are several options available:
Leave it in place. In some cases, clients choose to leave the device where it is — at least temporarily. This allows them to feed controlled or misleading information into the environment, effectively playing a game of chess with whoever is on the other end of the device. This can be a powerful tactic for confirming the source of a leak or gathering further intelligence.
Remove and destroy it. Alternatively, if the client simply wants the device gone, we will remove it and destroy it on their behalf.
Further forensic analysis. In many cases, there is additional investigative value to be extracted from the device itself. For example, if the device contains a SIM card, we can conduct a subscriber check to determine whether it is registered to an individual. More often than not, covert devices use unregistered, pay-as-you-go SIM cards — but even then, there may be lines of enquiry that can be pursued. The device itself can sometimes yield intelligence that points towards the individual responsible for planting it.
