Background Checks: What Can We Legally Find Out About You?
Titan Investigations What Can a Background Check Really Reveal? Titan PI TV Explains
In the latest episode of Titan PI TV, Simon Henson — managing director of Titan Private Investigation Limited — tackles one of the most frequently asked questions his agency receives: just how much can a professional investigator legally uncover about a person through a background check?
The answer, it turns out, is quite a lot.
Filming from Titan’s Derby headquarters, Simon sets the scene by highlighting the agency’s considerable national reach. With ten offices spread across England — from Truro in the far south-west to Manchester in the north-west — Titan is well placed to serve clients throughout the country. It is a point of quiet pride for Simon, and one that speaks to the growing demand for professional investigative services across the UK.
Covert, Bespoke, and Entirely Legal
From the outset, Simon is clear on two things: background checks conducted by Titan are completely covert, and they are completely legal.
The subject of any investigation will have no knowledge that enquiries are being made about them. Yet this discretion operates entirely within the law. Every background check Titan undertakes is tailored specifically to the client’s needs — a deliberate approach designed to avoid wasting time uncovering information the client already has or simply does not need.
Before any investigation begins, Titan completes what is known as a Legitimate Interest Assessment, or LIA. This is a formal process to establish that the client has a lawful reason for requesting the information, and that the intended use will not cause harassment, alarm, or distress to the subject. Investigators must also consider whether the client’s objectives could be achieved through less intrusive means. Only once all of these boxes are ticked does the work begin.
“All this information we have access to because they are public documents,” Simon explains, “but they’re not in the public domain.” It is a crucial distinction. The information exists — it is simply not easily accessible without the expertise, resources, and legal authority to retrieve it.
What Can Actually Be Uncovered?
Simon is careful to stress that no two background checks are identical, but he offers a broad overview of what Titan’s investigators are capable of finding.
Career and educational history can be verified to confirm whether a person’s claimed employment record and qualifications are genuine. In an age of embellished CVs and inflated credentials, this alone can be invaluable.
Current and historical addresses can be traced, in some cases going back as far as the 1980s. This includes not just where a person has lived, but who else was residing at those addresses at the time — information that can prove highly relevant in certain investigations.
Contact details, including mobile numbers, landline numbers, and email addresses, can be located where legally permissible.
Criminal history can be examined through a nationwide court search — what Titan refers to as a covert criminal history check — covering convictions going back up to ten years.
Financial background is another significant area. Investigators can identify bankruptcies, County Court Judgments (CCJs), and Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs), painting a clear picture of a person’s financial standing. Asset checks, particularly relating to property ownership, can help determine whether an individual has the means to satisfy a debt or court judgment.
Births, deaths, and marriages records can also be verified, confirming marital status or familial connections where relevant.
As Simonacknowledges, this is far from an exhaustive list. The scope of what can be uncovered is broad, and the investigation is always shaped by what the client actually needs to know.
Who Needs a Background Check — and Why?
Perhaps the most illuminating part of the episode is Simon’s exploration of the many different circumstances that lead people to seek background checks. The range is wider than most people might expect.
New relationships are a common trigger, particularly those that begin online. If you have met someone and they have given you a name and an address, a background check can confirm whether that person is genuinely who they claim to be. In an era of romance fraud and online deception, this kind of verification can offer real peace of mind.
Business partnerships represent another significant area. Whether you are considering going into business with someone or have already done so, understanding a partner’s financial history and past business conduct is simply good due diligence. Bankruptcies, CCJs, and IVAs are all factors that matter enormously when money and livelihoods are at stake.
Employers frequently use background checks to validate CVs or to conduct social media searches for potential red flags before making a hiring decision. Interestingly, Simon notes that the process can work in reverse too — prospective employees may wish to investigate a new employer to ensure the company is financially stable before leaving a secure position.
Families with elderly relatives may seek checks on carers being brought into the home. Whilst a standard DBS check may already be in place, a more comprehensive background investigation can provide an additional layer of reassurance.
Landlords are among the most frequent clients. Before accepting new tenants, it is entirely reasonable to want to understand their financial history — whether they have outstanding debts, CCJs, or a history of rent arrears. The cost of a background check is modest compared to the potential losses from a problematic tenancy.
Neighbour disputes can also prompt background checks. When dealing with a difficult neighbour, understanding who you are actually dealing with — including any relevant criminal history — can help inform how best to handle the situation.
Other scenarios include checks on individuals in positions of trust around children, investigations into a fiancé or fiancée before an engagement, and pre-litigation asset checks to determine whether pursuing a debt through the courts is actually worth the considerable expense involved.
A Case That Shocked the Office
To illustrate the real-world impact of background checks, Simon shares a case study — sanitised and shared with the client’s full permission.
A client came to Titan after his wife of seven years left the marital home without warning whilst he was at work. She had taken a high-value car and withdrawn approximately £250,000 from their joint accounts. Unable to reach her and increasingly alarmed, he turned to Titan with a simple but devastating question: who exactly had he married?
What investigators uncovered left the entire office stunned. Research revealed that the woman had been working as an escort for at least fifteen years — including throughout the entirety of the marriage. The client had believed his wife was at home during the day. In reality, she had been living an entirely separate life.
Titan’s assessment was sobering: the client appeared to have been deliberately targeted, the marriage sustained long enough to accumulate significant assets before she departed.
It is a striking example of how background checks can uncover truths that fundamentally change a person’s understanding of their own circumstances — and why, in some cases, the information uncovered is not merely useful, but life-altering.
Taking the Next Step
For anyone considering a background check, Simon’s advice is straightforward: pick up the phone or visit www.titaninvestigations.co.uk. From there, navigate to the Services tab and select Background Checks to find detailed information about what Titan can offer.
The initial conversation costs nothing, and Titan will be upfront about whether they can help and whether the request is legally sound. In approximately 95 per cent of cases, Simon says, they can assist — and the investigation will be tailored precisely to the client’s objectives.
In a world where trust is increasingly difficult to verify and the consequences of misplaced confidence can be severe, professional background checks offer something genuinely valuable: clarity. Whether you are protecting your finances, your family, your business, or simply your peace of mind, knowing the truth — legally and discreetly — is rarely a decision people regret.
